Yacon has been used for centuries for as food and as traditional tea to help maintain good health.
Specifically the Yacon leaves tea is used to treat diabetes. There are several studies in laboratory diabetic-induced rats that shows positive effects reducing hyperglycemia, improves liver health, kidney health and cholesterol levels.
One of this studies was done in England. Yacon roots extract was used in diabetic induced rats. The diabetes mellitus 1(DM1) was induced by the use of streptozotocin(STZ) (60 mg kg⁻¹ body weight). Diabetes causes the patient to be very hungry and very thristy. This happened to the laboratory animals too.
The diabetic animals received yacon roots aquous extract (YRAE) for 30 days. After this time it was observed that the rats were eating and drinkin less water than when they were initially diabetic. This treatment reduced glucose, total cholesterol, and bad cholesterols VLDL, LDL-c and triacylglycerol levels in diabetic rats.
YRAE normalized the activity of the liver enzyme alanine aminotransferase (ALT), which is a sign of a better function of the liver, suggesting a hepatoprotective effect in rats with STZ-induced DM1.
Studies in the laboratory in the University of Tucuman, Argentina have shown a cure of early nephropathy in diabetic-induced rats.

There are studies in laboratory diabetic-induced rats is the Sao Paulo State University in Brazil. Some of these studies showed that yacon extract lowers triglycerides and increases HDL, the good cholesterol.
Studies in the laboratory of Yacon leaves extract shows reduction of problems in the metabolism and cardiomyopathy in laboratory-induced diabetic rats. It helped the pancreas to produce the hormone Insulin and reduced hyperglycemia and fatty acids in the serum. Increased activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase).
It also decreased cellular disorganization and fibrosis in the heart. Reduces dysmetabolism and oxidative stress in pancreas and heart.
